The Caring Place, Inc. staff and dedicated volunteers serve the needs of shelter residents and 300-350 community clients each year who seek our services outside of shelter. Shelter and services are inclusive, and our clients are diverse, including women, men, children and the elderly. Our safe shelter and 24-Hour Crisis Line operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for individuals and their children who experience domestic violence.
The Caring Place offers more than emergency services. The Caring Place staff and advocates also collaborate with with many community partners to assist clients with navigating opportunities available to them. Our 48-bed shelter is located at an undisclosed address for the safety and confidentiality of those who seek refuge from domestic violence. The shelter is 100% ADA-accessible.
One-on-one sessions and support groups assist clients in connecting to community resources including housing, employment, and childcare. Advocates educate clients on the dynamics of family violence, and group sessions focus on developing life skills. In addition, The Caring Place, Inc. coordinates childcare and transportation to help clients access services.
A Legal Advocate ensures that clients discover their legal rights and the resources available to them. The Advocate acts as a liaison with the client and the legal system. The Caring Place, Inc. has an agreement with the Porter County Courts / Clerks Office to meet with and determine the needs of petitioners regarding obtaining protective orders. Advocates assist with filing appropriate paperwork and offering support and safety planning for the petitioners.
The Caring Place, Inc. provides support and resources to sexual assault survivors and their families to assist them through the recovery process.
A variety of topics are covered, including the dynamics of domestic violence, effects of family violence on children, substance abuse, parenting, nutrition, budgeting, and esteem building.
Educational presentations on domestic violence and sexual assault are offered regularly for organizations, businesses and community groups.
